Mobile users on laptops are a large and growing percentage of the gamer baseĢ. In my opinion, these are the reasons PC surround sound is not very popular:ġ. I still run 7.1 (technically 6.1 since I don't use a center) If you want to try one of the 7.1 headsets with discrete drivers in the earpieces, pick your poison, since they all suck equally I'd say. I can very clearly notice rear, front, side cues in games out of a variety of stereo headphones. Windows audio is set to 7.1 speakers, games are set to use windows default audio settings, SBX surround is set to a high enough level? (I prefer 100%.) Does the Zx just have a really crappy virtual surround setup? Because I have both a Creative X7 and a Creative E5 and with SBX set surround to 100%, both work great. You sure you have your stuff setup correctly? E.g. As for the the DAC you linked, it does not mention using any sort of HRTF solution, seems like it is meant for 7.1 speaker setups. Of course, if you would like to just go straight to the best virtual surround system ever, spend $2000 and wait 6 months pre-order a Smyth Realiser A16.

And I don't mention their G5 as many people consider it inferior to the E5 despite both products looking exactly the same. However Creative's products do not all have the same quality surround sound, for example I notice between the E5 and X7, the X7's VSS sounds much less reverby than the E5 when both are set to 100%. Out of those I would only recommend Sennheiser's or Creative's products as their VSS solutions are much, much better than the competition.

If you want to try different external products: GSX1000/1200, Creative Soundblaster E5 or X7, various Turtle Beach USB devices, Astro MixAmp, and Razer's software.

Can you hear 3d audio cues in a youtube binaural recording? (Disabled all virtual surround options when listening to those.) If your SBX on your soundcard doesn't work for you I don't know how any other USB 7.1 virtual surround DAC will really work-generic HRTF might not work for you.
